My classroom is full of diverse learners, with many needs. One way I want to reach out to them is by offering a variety of seating options that give students choice and needed movement. Flexible seating offers so many positive benefits that can be added to the classroom. Students can do their best work when they are in a place that is comforting and works for them. Giving students choice in their seating options also provides then with a sense of independence and ownership. The flexible seating options I have selected promote fitness, focus, community, and sensory needs. Balance chairs, balls, and stools are great for students who need a little extra movement throughout the day without disturbing those around them. These choices also provide a sense of novelty to learning that engages students throughout the year. I am currently implementing flexible seating in my classroom, with the resources I have available to me, but they offer few options of movement. With these new products, students will be able to choose to sit with a wobble stool at a high table, use a clipboard with the balance chairs, or sit at a traditional table with a balance ball or stool. I have seen the impact that flexible seating has in the classroom by watching students take ownership in their work, and I am excited to see how much more we can take on with these great new additions to our classroom.
