  • Living Skills Are Essential

    Funded Dec 15, 2021

Thank you so much for believing in this project and making it a reality right before the holiday break! The students and their families will be so happy to hear of the project’s success and I look forward to using the items both in the classroom and ADL room settings!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McKeon

  • Fine Motor Skills Help Me Dress to Impress!

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you for your support. The students/families were very excited to receive the OT Boards and wrote on the Google Classroom and showed them off during synchronous instruction.

The students were able to use their boards in order to improve their OT skills as well as their ADL skills using them. The Occupational Therapists were able to direct instruction using them and were able to get feedback from parents right away. The students were able to translate the skills that they were working on using the boards to their actual clothing to make them more independent.”

  • Don't Push my Buttons!

    Funded Oct 26, 2020

Thank you for your kind donations. The buttons have made such an impact on remote instruction. We use them to buzz in and answer questions. We use them to make choices. We use them to request.

The speech provider has made a ring of symbols that will be used with the buttons so the students will have a visual. She has reached out to the parents to work with them to come up with ways to implement the buttons at home to meet ADL/Vocational skills around the house. The buttons have increased the level of involvement during remote instruction, and have given my students a voice.”

  • STEAM Work Makes the Dream Work

    Funded Jun 12, 2020

Thank you for the LEGO Spike Prime kit and extension kit. The kids were super excited to see it over the camera during our friendship Friday celebration. There are several students that had not participated in any of my LEGO robotics outreach who thought it was really cool.

We discussed all the things we could make, and I built a project following the instructions and recorded a video of it. I even found a project online that built a machine that would solve a rubik's cube. I had the students and staff guess at what the machine could be as I built it.

During another friendship Friday celebration I showed it off, and we had it solve a rubik's cube live on camera! Thank you for bringing fun into our lives during times like these!”

  • Help Us Make Sense of Ourselves!

    Funded Dec 23, 2019

Thank you for your support to our classroom. I was able to use the weighted sweaters with my students along with the help from my OTs and PTs.

The students enjoyed the Chewlery. It worked to satiate their sensory needs, but was also an age appropriate fashion accessory.

The sensory balls were a big hit during movement time. Students enjoyed passing them to each other, as well as rolling them across their arms. Some students who would not usually hold balls, kept them in their hands for longer because of their texture.

Thank you for your continued support of my class and my students' learning needs.”

  • Help Us Make Adapted Books

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

Thank you very much for providing my class with the materials necessary in order to make adapted books. Since receiving the materials, we have made 5 books about the school rules and behavioral expectations, books about more and less for math, individual student books, and 2 books about the people in the school.

We will continue to use the materials in order to create adapted books on a variety of topics explored in the units throughout the year, as well as to make visual schedules for student tasks and activities.

My students enjoy exploring the materials and interacting with the books we made. We will eventually invite students from other classes to come into our class in order to read to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McKeon

  • Math Skills Prime Us for Success

    Funded Apr 16, 2019

Thank you so much for supporting our classroom and ensuring the growth of our math skills. Since receiving the materials, interest in math activities has skyrocketed. Students are even choosing to do these math activities during their free time.

The students were really excited when we got the boxes and opened them. We took out all the activities, and explored them individually. We each had our favorites. Some of us, even could use the activities to improve our skills that we are working on this year.

We look forward to implementing these materials into the curriculum, and providing time in lessons for their use. We have shared with our friends in the school that we have these materials, and it has inspired them to get them for their own classrooms.

Thank you once again for supporting our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McKeon

  • Based on a True Story!

    Funded Oct 26, 2018

Thank you for making it possible for us to have our own "Who Is (Your Name Here)? The story of My Life". We have used it in our various Writing classes to help us expand on our writing and come up with ideas. We share what we write with the students in our groups. We all read at different levels. Some of us identify pictures and some of us are approaching reading age appropriate texts. When we write, we have a target concept. We brainstorm and make a list. We choose one of the things on the list and go in deep. Some of us use pictures, and some of us write full sentences. The books that you got for us help involve the parents because we can send them home, and they can share information with us that the students can't yet. We will be using the books all year in the writing units. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McKeon

  • Do the Write Thing!

    Funded Oct 20, 2018

My students love their resources, and have shared them with the students in the other classes. The CVC Locks are extremely popular! Students use these during the ELA Reading period in order to strengthen their letter identification skills as well as their phonics skills, also they are just plain fun.

The Road to Reading books have been used in small group instruction. Students love using the puzzle pieces and the small letter cards to spell the CVC words. The fact that some of the cards are textured is beneficial for my sensory students. My paraprofessional leads the group and the students are now able to read some of the words in the book by identifying the words. He has shared his success with the paras in other classes, and has shown them how to use the books.

The Level sight word practice cards are popular for independent work, as my students feel confident to use them on their own, as well as challenge themselves with the higher levels. The fact that there are both fiction and nonfiction stories are great for all the students in my class, as they have many different preferences when they read. Thank you once again for giving my students these opportunities!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McKeon

  • VR Takes Us Beyond the Classroom

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

We have been having so much fun learning new things with our HTC Vive VR Headset and computer. We downloaded apps that taught us how to make pancakes, we garden virtually, and we even go on field trips to places in the community as well as far away places. We love flying to places and seeing things we have never seen. Mr. Chris even showed us an app that teaches students the systems of the body and had a full skeleton, it was really weird. Other classes are eager to come visit and try for themselves! We are looking forward to finding new apps and using the equipment in different classes!”

    Mr. McKeon

My students have multiple abilities, and people need to see them for that. They are amazing and have many different outspoken personalities. My students surprise me everyday. They attend a public school for Students with Special Needs in New York City.
