  • No Supersized BK’s or McD’s But Please Supersize Keats

    Funded Apr 21, 2010

I want to thank you for making the purchase of the Ezra Jack Keats big books possible. The children were very excited about sitting all together at one time to hear me read about the adventures of Peter. Believe it or not, they actually sat and enjoyed 3 of the books in one day. This is truly a first.

I have two children in my class who have visual disabilities therefore they usually sit very close to the book and sometimes block the other children's view. As a teacher, I am very excited that I am able to read the books to the whole class at one time and point out the letters, titles and pictures in the books without hearing someone yell "I can't see".

Thank you again for making this possible. Your contributions may seem small to you but my class and I consider ourselves fortunate that there a people like yourselves who care.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Weekly Readers to Share at School and Home

    Funded Sep 10, 2009

I would like to thank you again for the donation of Weekly Readers to our preschool classes. The children look forward to reading them at school and again at home with their parents. They call the Weekly Reader their newspaper.

The Weekly Reader provides pictures with short explanations of general knowledge concepts that we teach at school and introduces vocabulary words with pictures to the children. I have noticed that the children are able to understand and articulate what they see in the pictures after reading the Weekly Reader at school. I wish you could see the faces of the children when I ask them "Who read their Weekly Reader to someone at home?". Many of the children smile and raise his/her hand. We are also able to laminate the large teacher's edition and use the pictures during circle and center times. This is such a valuable resource because it can be used again and again.

I know this may have seem like a small investment to you but I really want you to know it was appreciated and it is a big thing to us. Thank you for being so thoughtful and providing us with this resource. You have helped a total of 30 children. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • We Want To Grow Our Own Vegetables Too

    Funded Oct 16, 2009

I want to thank you again for the materials you so generously purchased for our preschoolers. The pictures I have posted show some of the enthusiasm and how proud the children are to actually plant and grow food. The best part is because of your donation, we can grow food all year long.

The materials arrived a week after we went to the pumpkin patch. We were able to plant pumpkin seeds and watch them grow daily. It has been such a joy to watch the children put their coats and bags away and rush to the science area to discuss and record observations, measure the daily growth and become excited about learning.

I am so thankful for people like you who want to partner with teachers by providing resources. You have helped the children to understand that learning can be fun. Thanks to your generosity we will have spring in our classroom all year round. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Using Digital Recordings to Share School Literacy Activities

    Funded Sep 22, 2007

I am so excited about this school year and one reason is because of your generosity. I would like to thank you for supplying a way for our class to share part of the school day with their parents. I have shared the idea of sending the CD's home with the parents and they are very excited. Some of the students in my class have a vocabulary of less than 100 words. Some of the parents of my students are interested in singing the songs and reading the same books at home. The recorded CD's will give them a chance to hear and learn the songs and stories that we share during the class day. I am hoping that the recording of circle time and story time will help improve the language of the children as well as aid parents in taking a more prominent role in their child's education”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

All children should be given the opportunity to excel at learning. If children are provided with the proper resources, this opportunity is possible. Every year I am fortunate to teach 10 preschoolers who have special needs in a high-risk, urban public school in Virginia. They are often included in the general education preschoolers when given support and resources.
