I want my students to LOVE MATH!
Right now, so many of my students are frustrated and struggling because they have gaps in their understanding caused primarily by the impact Covid has had on students’ learning over the last two years. I need to fill those gaps! How? I have had to find ways to maximize my small group time and implement as many “fun” activities during whole group lessons to keep students engaged in learning in spite of their frustrations.
SO WHAT WILL THAT LOOK LIKE?
In small groups, I can use the place value board to help students understand borrowing or regrouping, skills they should have mastered in 2nd and 3rd grade. Students can use the multiplication and division dry erase boards to practice difficult skills and receive instant feedback about errors how to fix them.
The other students not in a small group will use the domino fraction and decimal game tiles, the fraction tower set, the faction circle activities set, Bobby’s Pizza Math Game, and the wrap-ups practice keys to review and reinforce concepts they have learned this year in a way that is students enjoy!
As a class, we can use the sets of fraction/decimal tiles and circle kits while talking about equivalent fractions, comparing or simplifying fractions which are all difficult for students to understand without physically maneuvering an object to understand an abstract concept.
Finally, demonstration pieces such as posters, large-sized magnetic currency, and fractions give students have one more opportunity to build a stronger foundation for next year. We can use will use anything from rulers, geometric shapes, or tools like clear discs that we can use to count groups of objects to help
