"Swyping" Our Way Into Learning
Funded Jan 28, 2012I want to express a heartfelt "Thank You" for your generosity and thoughtfulness. In a time of great need, it is refreshing to know that you believe in our children and their need to have access to a quality education that includes technology. Our Samsung Tablet has
been an invaluable resource to our classroom. Students have used it to access learning through research on all topics such as word origins, scientific principles, and historical figures. In addition, the Apps in math, science, and social studies we downloaded for our tablet have allowed extended practice of concepts we were studying in the respective areas and advanced studies for our higher-level learners. The students of Room 7 have truly enjoyed this special gift you contributed to-we appreciate you! :) ”

Funded Jan 19, 2012Thank you for helping make history come alive for my students! Because of your generous donations, we were able to move beyond the textbook and extend our learning with the many activities and resources the kits provided. We created time lines, studied maps created during the Age of Exploration, analyzed political cartoons and primary documents such as the Decleration of Independence and the Constitution, read biography cards on famous Americans, and handled realia such as a silk, fur, spices, and a tricorne hat representative of the colonial period. One of our favorite simulation activities was a mock "taxation" in which students role played the colonists, tax collectors, and King George during the late 1700's. Students made the discovery that
King George benefited the most from taxation :) and the activity was a springboard into further and deeper discussion and research on the events leading up to the American Revolution.
Students benefited so much from these resources. I am so grateful that you believed in this project and made this kind of authentic learning possible. ”

Funded Dec 20, 2011We want to extend a heart-felt "Thank You" for your contribution towards our project. Because of your generosity, our earth science unit was deeply enriched. The students enjoyed using the hands-on materials in learning about our solar system, water cycle, and weather systems. There were many connections made, questions that arose that lead to further investigations and research, and critical thinking that became evident when using the materials your donation helped fund.
I want to provide you with just a few examples of the positive impact the materials purchased had on my students. Each day, a student got a chance to check out the telescope to take home and share the experience of viewing the night sky with their family. The smaller scale planet models allowed us to put into perspective the immense scope of our Solar System and the relative size of the planets in comparison to one another. Students understood the classification of planets and why they were so. Through the models, they could see how the terrestrial planets were grouped and clustered together in comparison to the gas giants that were farther away and divided by the astroid belt. They loved the interactive solar system that provided facts and details about each planet. There were a lot of "AHA" moments when students got a demonstration of the water cycle using the model provided in the investigative kit. They were so amazed to see condensation and precipitation happening within this plastic landform chamber. The model helped students make connections between the movement of water from the ocean to land. They understood the water cycle is why we never run out of water; it's always recycling the water we have and moving it across our Earth's surface! The weather maps also proved to be a very valuable resource because students learned how to read a weather map and see patterns and relationships within weather systems. They were so interested in this topic because of the hands-on experience, that some students were watching the weather forecast daily, observing online weather satellite images, and discussing their findings on their OWN accord! WOW!
Because of your donation, you made a difference. This kind of learning would have never happened by just reading a textbook, and for that we are truly thankful. :) ”
