Diverse Kindergarten Near Migrant Shelter Needs Play Based Educational Materials
Funded Oct 6, 2024Thank you so much for donating to our donors choose project this fall. These students have had a challenging year, with many students living in shelter, and new students leaving and arriving without notice over the year so far. The support you provided has brought joy and ease to our classroom life that is so necessary.
As the materials arrived, students would laugh, clap, and gasp. They couldn't believe that they had materials that responded directly to their interests, and beautiful high quality materials to work with on their studies. They helped me carry the packages up the stairs and excitedly asked me what they were.
Students use these materials daily. Students are practicing their math skills with the vibrant board games and counting bears, building their hand strength, and reading books they are truly excited about. Your contributions have had an enormous impact every day.
As the political landscape shifts, so will the make up of our student body. The students and I are working hard every day to make big jumps in their learning that they can take with them wherever they go. And of course, peace and love in their hearts that they can take with them too.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Charno

Funded Apr 29, 2024This was such a challenging year for these students, and you helped make the last 2 months a time of safety, joy, and learning. As students were dealing with the challenges of migration to a new country and an inconsistent school year, they appreciated deeply the social emotional tools we were able to provide. We built a routine for them, and they received direct instruction that was direly needed.
Students showed rapid and substantial growth in their knowledge of letter names and sounds. They listened to read to me recorded books, studied Lois Elhert, and worked with diverse materials to build up their literacy, math, and science skills. By the end of year, some students were beginning to read and write short sentences. They began to greet each other and play together in English. All students created a personal book that they were able to take home at the end of the year.
And of course, they treasured the cozy corner. Students were learning to regulate in a large group, and were able to take breaks with pillows, stim toys, comforting books, and stuffies. This option to take a break and rest make a big difference as students were navigating so many big changes.
I shared that all of these gifts came from you all. They were so astounded and excited every time something new came in. It made their time special, and supported. Plus, it really helped me adapt to a new school and new classroom where I didn't have any resources and had minimal supplies given the odd start time.
This was huge for all of us. Thank you for caring and for donating. We appreciate you.”
