My media center does not have a large collection of interesting nonfiction books. English learners (ELs) find it difficult to learn social studies and science concepts from textbooks. Having Scholastic News would be a great asset to my classroom because the articles are engaging and discuss current events. Additionally, Scholastic News is Common Core aligned, it assesses reading comprehension skills, other reading core skills, encourage students to use graphs and data to support their answers. Scholastic News would be instrumental for my students because it will build background knowledge, help students make connections, and keep them abreast of current events.
