My students survive day to day in a 99% impoverished Latino neighborhood with very few positive examples of other cultures. I want my students to experience the similarity of their lives to that of other cultures. No matter where you come from, all different types of cultures have similar struggles. My students learn about three core values at our school: respect, perseverance, and carino (caring). Carino, by far, is the most difficult to teach. My students don't simply live, they survive day to day. So, they've never reallly learned how to be empathetic, how to imagine walking in someone else's shoes, or even more basic, how to simply live in harmony with people different from themselves.
