Our students come from an impoverished urban setting. Most students have one parent homes or both parents working to make ends meet. This inner city school, is for many of them, the most constant that they have in their lives. By creating a warm and inviting library I know I can foster a genuine reading environment. My students have diverse needs. By empowering them to chose their own reading materials and chose comfortable spots in the room they are finding a joy in taking time to read each day. Teaching the children how to keep the books manageable adds a feeling of ownership and responsibility which they truly need.
