My fourth graders love to read! Readers need access to a variety of texts foster a love of reading. Research shows that children of lower socioeconomic status are disproportionately under-exposed to informational text, which could partly explain stubborn achievement gaps. Lack of background knowledge is a major barrier to reading, and informational text provides the background knowledge that supports the development of new concepts and enables readers to develop more diverse reading comprehension strategies. This project will give my kiddos more access to information books for my classroom Informational text is a type of nonfiction text that gives the reader information, It is authentic and real. It will help students build a strong foundation for success in school. When informational text are required in the upper grades content knowledge is critical. It also will better prepare students for real life reading, such as reading required at work. It also may turn students on to reading and will address students' questions and answers and build knowledge of the world we live in. Giving students access to information text will also allow them to expand and build their vocabulary. I plan to use these during guided reading groups. Please join me in giving my students access to informational books. Together, the future looks bright.
