Every year, countless studies highlight the importance of mindfulness in the classroom. However, helping students access their deeper feelings and self-regulate their emotions while listening to YouTube ads play during our focus music can cheapen the experience. With live instruments students will not only benefit from the increase in focus, memory enhancement, and emotional wellbeing that comes from live music, but they will also foster a sense of responsibility from the opportunities to play and create a space of mindfulness for their peers. The cognitive and academic benefits of music in aiding memory, recall, and emotional wellness will help all of my students from every age, race, gender, and socioeconomic background access equitable, SEL-based lessons in the classroom every week. Music will not only enhance brain function (through activating the hippocampus), but it will also help students take charge of their mindfulness, emotions, and participating. Students will work together to play these instruments, giving every student an opportunity to enhance the classroom experience through creative music making and the empowerment that happens when students take charge of their learning and find intrinsic motivation to participate and find joy in learning.
