  • Dr. Mullins' Fun and Fabulous Seating

    Funded Feb 26, 2020

Thank you so much for donating to our project. Unfortunately, we were only able to use our new seats for a short time before we shut down for the year, but in that time we really enjoyed them. The students were so excited the day we got them! They established ground rules right away - no shoes on the rug to keep it clean (which is why some are in socks in the picture). Wobble chairs and yoga balls have to be shared. Kids who really need the wobble chairs and yoga balls to focus should get first choice, but everyone gets a turn.

These are their rules, not mine! They decided how to use our new seats. I was so thrilled at the way they took charge and ensured that everyone got a turn.

The most popular area in our room quickly became the rug. Students loved to congregate there. I think it felt more "homey" to them. The yoga balls were also a big hit - even for me! They did let me sit on them every now and then. :)

Most important, my students who have trouble with focus were more able to do so with the wobble chairs and yoga balls. It made a HUGE difference in their ability to do the work. I'm not sure exactly how the wobble chairs work, but I do know that they made a difference for the students. Thank you so much!

I apologize that I was not able to get more pictures with the students. We only had our seating a few weeks before school shut down, so some of the pictures were taken when I went to clean my classroom for the year. I'm looking forward to using them with next year's class!”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Mullins

  • Kindles for Kids

    Funded Mar 16, 2019

Your donations transformed the use of technology in my classroom last year! We received our items in March and began using them right away. The students loved doing Kahoot! on the Kindles, and it especially helped our students who did not have access to their own handheld technology. Before we got the Kindles, these students had to share with a student who had a personal cell phone or tablet when we did anything technology related. The Kindles allowed them to participate more fully without having to rely on other students who were willing to share. This might seem small, but is empowering for students who often feel set apart because they can't afford things that others can.

We were also able to use the Kindles for individual learning projects and career exploration during a goals project. We did the career exploration during FSA testing time, which tends to be negative for many of our students. They were very excited to learn about the wide variety of career options available to them. One thing that surprised me was how often the students used the Kindles to check their grades on Edsby, which allowed them to improve their grades. I did not think they would use them this way, but many of the students expressed gratitude in their thank you letters that they were able to stay on top of their grades better. I'm looking forward to using the Kindles for virtual reality and other activities this coming school year.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Mullins

  • Virtual School Rocks!

    Funded Nov 17, 2014

Thank you so much for donating to my project! I have been able to share books with my class since I received it and the students enjoy it very much. Another thing I have been able to do with it is easily scan images and text from books to include with lessons. I did not realize I would be able to do this so I was very excited!

You may be wondering what a virtual school teacher does. We do everything a teacher in a "brick and mortar" school does. The main difference is that we really have to think hard about how to make our content meaningful and interesting for the students. There are few opportunities for "off the cuff" teaching because we need to plan and deliver our curriculum in advance. We are always looking for ways to keep our students interested in their learning!

One way we do this is in live lessons. We use Blackboard Collaborate, which is similar to Skype but designed with classrooms in mind, to conduct live lessons. I have been able to share books with students in live lessons, and even recorded some lessons so I could share them with you and see the students interacting with the lessons. The only problem is, the books do not show up in the recordings! I suspect that this is blocked somehow in order to avoid copyright issues. Nonetheless, the students could see the books during the lesson and they were very excited!

I can't wait to use the document camera for science demonstrations. Thank you so much for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Mullins

My students are 7th grade budding scientists! In science class, we focus on the traits of scientists and using scientific processes from a perspective of curiosity and creativity. We are learning to become scientific researchers through the use of technology and hands on inquiry. My students come from all walks of life and are enthusiastic about their learning!
