I am a firm believer in the power of choice, especially when it comes to literature. My classroom library is a space for students to explore voices from all over the world. They enter into plotlines that break down societal barriers, that teach them about our complicated past, that show them what it means to be human. Choice reading opens doors for my students, but can be difficult and expensive to maintain. We often go to the school library for students to check out books, but I have seen first-hand the power of an overflowing classroom library. Access to high interest, diverse literature is the best way to ignite (or reignite) students' love of reading. The more kiddos see themselves in their books, the more they will read; the more kiddos read, the better they read; the better they read, the more fluent they become which leads to vocabulary acquisition, reading stamina, and comprehension. While these are reasons enough to invest in a robust classroom library, ultimately, my goal is to get my students to say with pride, "I am a reader."
