  • Word Builders

    Funded Jan 10, 2023

I am amazed at how much impact this has had on my students. First the kids were just really excited to have some letters to play with during our phonics time. But I have seen firsthand that manipulating the letters rather than just writing down the letters has helped some kiddos striving in phonics start to thrive. Having phonics as manipulatives adds an extra learning element that helps them remember the phonics skills taught that day. I had students who were mixing up their letters (such as they would sound out /c/ /a/ /t/ then say "top". Just having the ability to see the letters moving around and moving them closer together helped them understand the order of the letters.”

Thank you so much for all the donations to my classroom. We will now have plenty of books to read that the students can bring home and build their love of reading. Also thank you for the sand for the students to stamp words into. You are amazing!!! Thank you”

  • Books That Reflect My Students' Diversity

    Funded Feb 17, 2022

Thank you so much for supporting our classroom. It means a lot as we now have books that represent the diversity in our classroom. My classroom is very diverse, however the books we have them read seem to represent mostly one culture. So, it is important that my students see themselves in the characters of books that they read.

The students get excited because the character is wearing the same kind of headdress they do, or celebrates the same holiday, makes my heart happy. They also love sharing about their culture and how it might be similar to the characters. The smile on their face is worth every penny spent on them.”

  • Color Printer for Students

    Funded May 4, 2021

Thank you so much for the donation of a colored printer. We already used it so much this year. We were able to print personal word walls for all of the first graders that help students to read and write and they were so excited with how beautiful and engaging they were. We have also printed various activities that were amazing in color rather than in black and white.

We can also use the printer to scan their work and send to their parents electronically, or even copy so the child has more than one copy if they need to share with their parents and their teacher.”

  • Getting Children Hooked on Reading

    Funded Mar 1, 2019

You should have seen the excitement in the children's faces when we opened up our boxes from our Donor's Choose project. They kids couldn't wait to start reading their new chapter books and start listening centers during our reading stations/Daily 5 time.

The students asked if we could also bring the books home with our lending library books and I told them of course they could. You have touched so many lives with your donations to our projects. Not just this group of 1st graders but for children for many years to come.

My students have gotten hooked on chapter books because they have fallen in love with a character book series. They can't wait for the next book to find out what adventures their character goes on next. We are also working on writing our own realistic fiction series books. One student told me that she has been "waiting for this her whole life." When they are stuck on their writing, they turn to these books for more ideas about adventures and problems their characters can get into. Thank you so much for your contribution. I hope that together, we have made a classroom of children who love to read.”

  • For the Love of Reading

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

This is Mrs. Hunt's Fabulous First Graders writing to you from Kent, Washington. My class would like to say " Thank you so much for the chapter books." They will help us to build our reading stamina, get hooked on series books, level up to a new reading level, and to help us work on our comprehension. The class was so amazed at all the books we got to add to our classroom library. These books will not just help my first graders this year, but all students in future classes will benefit from your generosity.”

  • Math Manipulatives For Engage NY Common Core

    Funded Apr 20, 2015

My name is Carolyn Hunt and I am a Kindergarten teacher at Martin Sortun Elementary in Kent. I cannot thank you enough for your support donating to my classroom. I have been wanting to make these purchases myself to help my classroom have a math rich environment, but it would have taken me years and years to supply my kids with all of these resources. With your generous help, we were able to get 12 rekenreks, 12 scales, enough dough to use during our experiments with weight to last us a couple years, enough shapes for every student to feel and explore, durable number grids, privacy partitions, reusable write and wipe pockets, ten frames with discs, pony beads and sticks to count with, and a storage unit with clear bins to store it all. Kindergarteners need hands-on resources to really understand the common core math standards and now they have them and so will my future Kindergarteners for years to come.

The excitement in my student's faces when they saw all the materials was priceless. They had never seen so many math supplies and were so excited to start using them right away. That night I stayed late to go through my checklist and to organize the materials so that they could be in my student's hands the next day. The excitement in my classroom was more so than any party that could have given my students.

I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your support and what an impact you have made on our little classroom and our school. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hunt

  • Science Readers and Explorers

    Funded Apr 3, 2015

I cannot thank you enough for your support donating to my classroom. I have been wanting to make these purchases myself to help my classroom have a science rich environment, but it would have taken me years and years to supply my kids with all of these resources. With your generous help, we were able to get 9 STEM related activities/games that help me to teach the Next Generation Science Standards. These materials give the students hand-on experiences learning about engineering, environmental science, applied science, and technology. We also were able to purchase more than 200 science books that are written at the student's reading levels so that they can explore science during their reading block.

The excitement in my student's faces when they saw all the materials was priceless. They had never seen so many science supplies and were so excited to start using them right away. That night I stayed late to go through my checklist and to organize the materials so that they could be in my student's hands the next day. Our school is a very diverse school with many different cultures, many English Language Learners, and a high poverty rate. Many students come in well below grade level academically because of the lack of experience they have in preschool or at home. Because it is a Kindergarten classroom, there is a great many more students who are learning English for the first time in our classroom. I have had as many as 80% of my students learning English in my classroom in the past. This creates a classroom with a wide range of abilities and experiences. Kindergartners are so excited to learn and are like little sponges that soak up so much knowledge in their first year of school. I love the excitement my students have for learning and think that even though it takes a lot of energy and patience to teach Kindergarteners, that the joy they have in learning makes it all worth it.
