  • Science Comes to Life With 3D Models

    Funded Aug 18, 2023

I cannot tell you how important your donations are to me and my students. The kids LOVE it when they see me changing out the filament in the 3d printer. They know it's something new and fun happening.

Science is mostly hands on in my classroom and the 3D printer makes doing some of our projects and activities even possible. The kids made balloon cars for our energy unit. We made them from cardboard and straws, but, unfortunately, they couldn't get them to work right; the wheels kept falling off. One of the kids mentioned making a 3d printed balloon car and it wasn't long before we had the printer printing away! Without your donation for filament we wouldn't have had enough to create them.

Whether it's a Balloon powered car (which you can see pictured) or small trophies for work on Science projects well done (little flames for the best team thermos, or water drops for the best Water Cycle children's story, etc.) the kids love to see the printer going. YOUR donation helps make Science F-U-N in my classroom. Thank you so much!!!”

Thank you so much for your donation to help support my efforts in my classroom! We have been so busy this year learning new skills in Math and Science.

The Teacher's Pay Teachers funds have been incredibly helpful to have "Doodle Notes" and other resources for my students. My students LOVE their Science Journals that we decorated and are filling with lab data sheets, notes and other COLORFUL items. The colored pencils are being put to good use, I assure you. I have special pencil sharpeners for the colored pencils. The kids love that they have everything they need to color their notes, and other activities. Cooper, especially enjoys the 3D printing (you provided us with filament). He suggested that the winners of my weekly behavior and participation contest be awarded by getting to print something on the 3D printer. He happened to win the first time and printed a helicopter (see the picture). Again, thank you on behalf of my students! We really appreciate your support.”

  • Common Core in Science (SIMS)? YUP!

    Funded Oct 17, 2013

I cannot begin to express the impact this project has had on my students and learning. The kids were so excited to be able to get their hands on the tablets. As technology gurus, they were able to get on them and begin searching and collaborating immediately. The first thing they asked was "how soon can we get on them?" I have a couple kids who have their own tablets... They showed me how to use it, too!

Our first project was researching the functions of organs of the human body. The assignment was for the kids to pretend they were an organ found in the body. They had to write a friendly letter convincing their body that they (the organ) was the most important organ in the body. They got into groups depending on the organ they chose and collaborated on their research using the tablets. They loved it!

In being able to use the tablets, it makes it fun to research and the kids are able to put it to work to help them internalize the information they find to make convincing arguments. As a result, I can be more of a facilitator than a traditional teacher. The impact on their learning is immeasurable! Thank you so much for funding us! The kids and I are so appreciative!”

  • SIMS Teaching Engineering in Science & Common Core

    Funded Oct 10, 2012

I cannot begin to express my gratitude for supplying my class with funds to purchase Legos and Roylco Straws with connectors. After studying the Next Generation Science standards, I have found that engineering is going to play a big part in science instruction. The Legos and straws are great for teaching physics. My students like to draw out their designs after they've created them and share them to see if their classmates can build them, too.

There are many lessons to be learned using a "child's toy", but I think the biggest impact I've seen is my students' understanding of building to scale. My 6th graders think they're playing and then when we have discussions in class, they all of a sudden say, "Hey, that's like when we built the bridges!" That is so exciting!

Thank you again for your generosity! These are gifts that will carry on from year to year! Thank you!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Neves

  • Igniting Interest in Science Thru Experience and Technology

    Funded Oct 27, 2011

I cannot tell you the heartfelt appreciation I, and my students, feel for your generous donations that supplied us with much needed digital cameras, memory cards, and microphones. I wish you could have seen my students' faces when I opened the cameras.

On the particular project you see in our pictures, we were learning about the spectrum of light. On an unusually warm and sunny day during this mild winter we are having, we took prisms and the digital cameras outside to our courtyard. The children explored creating spectrums by placing the prisms in the sun and shining the spectrum onto a shadow. It was challenging for many. They were so excited to be able to bend the light rays to form the spectrum and took a ton of pictures. We then took the cameras, uploaded the images, and created photostories, through the use of free software downloaded online (Photostory 3). The students named their stories and narrated their stories with the microphones. So,my children were able to explore how to take digital images, upload them to the computer and save them. They learned to import the images into software and record their own voices onto the program and save the story to be listened to again and again. You can imagine that they will NEVER forget how fun learning about the spectrum of light has been.

Since that particular unit, we have been preparing for a multicultural showcase. Each group has used the digital cameras to keep a digital scrapbook of their projects. We have been writing essays, poems, researching and creating artifacts for North American countries we have been learning about. At the end of the process, the kids will get to explore different ways to share and produce their "scrapbooks". Some may want to create Powerpoints, or my personal favorite Prezis. They are bubbling with anticipation. That makes my job so much fun.

Once again, thank you so much for your generosity! Technology is such a HUGE part of education these days and with Common Core it will be even more so. Teaching our children the best way we can, using best practices, is paramount and you've made it so much more meaningful to my students, future students and students throughout our school... Yes, I plan to share the cameras :-). ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Neves

I have approximately 56 6th grade Science and Math students. We are a heterogeneous group, consisting pretty equally of all races and socioeconomic groups. We are a public magnet school. Magnet has helped to generate interest in our schools as it has attracted students from other districts. Our particular school has about 600 students. Our staff sets high expectations for all students and we are committed to student centered, hands on as much as possible, and project based learning. We, as a school, do not use textbooks or basal readers. We rely on technology and classroom libraries to mold learning.
