Ready to Learn!
Funded Nov 22, 2019The various books and art supplies we were able to provide our students because of your donations have made a tremendous impact. Our students are not only able to connect with the story, but be hands on with it as well. We read some of our big books and ask comprehension questions, a skill all young readers need to develop to succeed, and then we create amazing art projects based on those books. The first step in becoming a fluent reader is to enjoy reading. There's no doubt that your contributions have allowed us to instill the love of reading in all of our students. Thanks to you, reading is more fun than ever!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Alane Adams & The Rise Up Foundation and 6 other donors.Chapter Books in First Grade!
Funded Sep 24, 2018The chapter books we received have truly sparked a new love for reading for the first graders at 49th Street Elementary. I am working with our above benchmark students. These students read at 2nd grade level and beyond. So much of their day is spent learning phonics patterns and reading "small books". When I let them know we received chapter books as a donations from you, their faces lit up and they couldn't wait to start! We just finished reading "Zapato Power" and the kids couldn't believe they read a 77 page book. This has given them the confidence to choose chapter books when reading to themselves and has helped me monitor and improve their reading fluency even further. We are about to begin reading "Nate the Great" and I know the level of enthusiasm to start a new book would have never been this high had it not been for your generous donation.
Thank you!”

A Moving Brain is a Learning Brain!
Funded Aug 8, 2018Since I began introducing the flexible seating options, my first graders have been super excited to come to school everyday. I explained to my students that the seats were donated by family and friends. They are very appreciative and feel so special. It's amazing to see them be so responsible and mature about choosing a seat that allows them to focus and get their work done. This level of self reflection when choosing a seat is something I've never seen at their age before. I especially notice this when we work on our read to self stamina. Before I start the timer, they pick their seat and a quiet spot in the room. As of last week, they have been able to read for 10 minutes with out any interruptions! 10 minutes for 24 six year Olds this early in the year? AMAZING! I knew these flexible seating options would help them focus, but as I walk around during read to self, I'm just so blown away by how effective they really are.
When we first received some of the seating, my students were thrilled to test them out. They had never been in a classroom that had these types of seating options and several of them said they felt lucky to be in our class. I remember overhearing a conversation between two students and I couldn't help but smile when I heard one tell the other "I really love this class. It's so cool."
Our class is the first in our school to implement this strategy and other teachers are quickly noticing the benefits. I'm so thankful to have family and friends who supported this project. I thank you for taking the time to read about my project and deciding to make a donation. Thank you for believing in me, my project, and my students!”
