My students are your "everyday" middle school students. They look like everyone else, but they don't feel like it. They're in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, in a public school setting, in North Carolina. These students find it nearly impossible to learn in a regular classroom. They have academic and/or behavioral and/or character issues that keep them from learning. Their misbehavior is a direct result of their lack of knowledge. They've fallen farther and farther behind each school year. No one has been able to meet their needs yet. They're not "bad kids." They just need to be taught from the bottom up. They need be taught, or retaught, the basics of reading and the basics of math before they can build on to that knowledge and learn the higher concepts. They need to be taught these things while being treated with respect and value.
