My students live in a highly impoverished region which is the most racially/ethnically diverse, large, metropolitan area in the nation. Ours is a Title One school where the majority of students receive free or reduced price lunch. We have social workers on-site to provide extra support to our homeless and pregnant students and also, have a food bank for students in need. Basic supplies such as pencils and erasers are often times difficult for my students to come by and markers and crayons are considered luxury items to most. These students are all in a language immersion program due to their recent arrival in the United States from locations around the world. This program is designed to help students learn the English language, while also teaching them grade appropriate content. In order to break the language barrier, it is important for my students to have visual aides. They will be able to engage in kinesthetic learning through the use of materials such as Play Doh, colors and modeling. In addition to the language barrier that my students are facing, most are also employed and work many long hours outside of school. My students have faced so much in their short lives and deserve to have a positive learning experience. I truly believe that they will become part of the next generation of doctors, lawyers and teachers if they are only given the opportunity to excel and attain a quality education.
