Music Can Heal Troubled Minds And Hearts

Funded Dec 6, 2012

I want to thank you for all of the music materials you donated after Hurricane Sandy. As you know, our school's infrastructure was severely flooded and we had to relocate to another school. Many of our students and staff were also relocated to other houses, towns, and even states. It was an awful time for us all and left us very worried about our present and even more, our future.

The musical instruments and other supplies that you donated have brightened and enhanced a very dismal year. The children were so excited to see the vibrant colors of the jungle drums and rainbow rhythm sticks. Many of my students lost personal items in the storm including their recorders, so it was a really nice moment to see their faces when the school was able to replace them.

With these instruments the students are able to work on their music literacy and performance. This particular lesson that I posted was entitled "Vamos a la Mar" from GamePlan2, by Jeff Kriske and Randy Delelles. The objectives I was able to meet were learning repertoire in Spanish and English, learning about phrase, and preparing rondo form. The children worked in groups creating rhythm patterns and saw their creations projected on the Smartboard. I would assure you they had a lot of fun and were very satisfied with the final project. If the technology allows us in the future, we will record these pieces for you so you can hear them!

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Donors choose is just a wonderful idea!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Whelan Cangelosi
