My sweet little energetic preschoolers are deaf or hard of hearing students who travel for 45 to 90 minutes one way each day to get to school. They attend a school for the deaf and hard of hearing that promotes strong language and communication skills. These skills are taught not only to the students, but to their family members as well. Developing strong language and communication skills are essential at this young age. The amount of language acquired at this age typically indicates the type of educational career the child will have, how well they will communicate with family and community members, and how much of the world they will be able to comprehend as they grow into adults. Imagine not being able to communicate what's bothering you when you are ill or how you are feeling about a recent episode at school or even what you would like to order at your favorite restaurant. Language opens up the world for children, especially deaf and hard of hearing ones.
