¡Sí se puede!- Creating Bilingual and Biliterate Students
Funded Aug 2, 2017We are extremely grateful for your donations which helped us add authentic Spanish literature to our library. Because of you, our students have more options and variety when researching a topic. Students will expand their comprehension skills through vocabulary acquisition and text analysis. Many of the books will be used to write about different habitats. Students will be able to share what they have learned after searching for books on this topic.
Reading is the most important skill that a child will learn. Reading opens doors to all other subjects. Therefore, it is important to promote a love for reading. Children in our classroom have open choice to sit where they are most comfortable while reading a book. We learn how to build stamina and choose books that are most appropriate to read. Reading is promoted throughout each subject and this is why books are such a necessity.
Many of these books represent Hispanic culture and life. Our students will be able to relate to the stories they read or are read to them. Many of the scenarios are quite familiar. For example, two of the books are stories about leaving family behind when crossing the border. These books discuss feelings and experiences that many of our children have witnessed themselves. We will be able to have an open dialog about being away from family and being in a different country. Upon listening to others share experiences, students will develop empathy and have a better understanding of the hardships that many classmates go through.
In closing, I would like to express my gratitude. Thank you for supporting our students and allowing them to develop into good citizens with a love for reading and a passion for learning.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Montalvo
This classroom project was brought to life by An Anonymous Funder and 7 other donors.Promoting Biliteracy In 2nd Grade
Funded Sep 16, 2015Thank you so much for your generous donations towards our Donor's Choose project. We obtained 23 books that will be used to teach different reading strategies in both English and Spanish(total of 46 books). In addition to having the books in English and Spanish, we carefully selected these titles as they have a multicultural theme. The kids will listen about stories that are from other countries and learn more about the life of others, thinking of how we can relate to them. Being able to have the same titles in English and Spanish helps us bridge the two languages which finally helps us towards our goal for our students. This goal is to continue to develop our children's ability to become bilingual and biliterate.
We know how important it is to be bilingual and biliterate. This means that children are able to speak, understand, read and write in two languages. This is a life long skill that will follow our students throughout their lives. This valuable skill will place them ahead in job seeking as well as expand the amount of people they can communicate with and help.
When the students saw the boxes coming in they were very excited to see its content. They love using the phones and use them on a daily basis. While they read a book they talk into the phone and in turn they hear while they read to self. This item helps students listen to themselves as they read and it helps them concentrate better. These phones also help reduce noise so that other students can concentrate on their task.
Again, thank you for donating to our cause. We will continue to use these materials for years to come.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Montalvo
Vamos a Leer en Cale DL2
Funded Oct 2, 2014We are so grateful for the resources donated to our classroom. When the huge boxes came in, you can imagine the commotion within the class. "Wow!" The students would say. "Is that all for us?" The next day when the resources were displayed in their corresponding spots students huddled around in amazement. We had several sessions learning how to take care of these resources.
Students have greatly enjoyed using these materials and they have used them on a daily basis. The listening station provided eight headphones and a place to store them. We have the option of using them individually to use with a tablet or we can use them to listen to the same story in a small group. We have used them for both reasons to listen to Spanish books. Many laughs, as well as "oooo's" and "aaaaa's" have come from that station.
The bean bags provided have given the students a comfortable spot to sit in when using a tablet, when reading a book or simply working with partners. The children have to talk to each other about whose turn it is to sit on the bean bag that day. Children realize that they must give others a chance to sit there too.
As you can see, these resources have been a huge asset to our classroom. They are a tool to facilitate Spanish instruction at a faster pace. I have seen a very quick turnaround in Spanish language acquisition. Your support has had a huge impact in our class and for that we are very grateful. Thank you very much for helping our students develop this language.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Montalvo
