Distinguishing how my students learn and focus helps me structure my instruction and work times. My students are very movement oriented. They are constantly wanting to move and get the wiggles out. Independent work is challenging for them. Several of my students are diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, or Autism. I provide students opportunities to find a spot in the room that works for them, whether it be at a desk, on the carpet, or using a pillow. By providing my students with additional flexible seating options, I can support their success and significantly improve their ability to find a reliable work space. While giving students the ability to choose where they work, I also want to teach my students about ownership and responsibility. Part of our school's behavior matrix focuses on owning choices. I want them to evaluate their work choices and reflect on what helps them focus and learn. Students would also be responsible with maintaining the items and make sure they are stored and used appropriately. I want them to take further pride in their classroom materials and learning tools. My students do not get as much stability and opportunity at home, so I want to provide an engaging learning environment to help them discover their potential as well as supporting their growth and curiosity as lifelong learners!
