“Did you know that reading fluency was the forgotten stepchild of reading curriculum?” During the 1970’s to the 1990’s teachers and reading scholars were interested in readers’ ability to decode words accurately, not in the readers’ ability to decode words automatically and quickly.” (Rasinski, Homan & BIggs, 2008, pg.2) Students with the ability to decode text efficiently and quickly are better able to recognize words with automaticity therefore it allows them to focus more on comprehension of the text. Over the years research findings on fluency instruction has lead the National Reading Panel to consider fluency instruction as one of the five components to successful reading alongside phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. My goal for writing this grant is to effectively teach reading fluency to first grade students while making it fun and engaging and creating lifelong fluent readers. The recordings will be viewed by the teacher, parents and students. Often students think they are reading fluently, until they actually hear themselves reading aloud. The microphone headsets are perfect for this. This will help students understand that practice makes for better fluency. The recording booths can also be used to record the students thinking and understanding of the reading text. Often what students say gives us completely different information than a written comprehension response. Students that are fluent readers will comprehend their text easier increasing first grade mClass reading TRC and DORF scores significantly. First graders have to move six reading levels in one school year to stay on grade level which requires a great deal of effort by the teacher, student and parent. In order to sustain the expected reading growth it is imperative to keep students engaged. The items from this project proposal will help motivate students to become actively engaged. Thank you for considering my project.
