My students are currently preparing to take the NY State Algebra Regents exam—an exam they must pass in order to graduate high school. As they prepare, they use a shared class set of graphing calculators to visualize mathematical concepts, efficiently perform computations, and strategically solve problems. Working with these calculators strengthens their mathematical understanding and gives them confidence to apply ideas they’ve mastered to tackle unknown problems.
Access to these calculators during the Regents exam can be the difference between passing and failing. Unfortunately, my school does not have enough working calculators for every student to use during the required state exam. Students must share the old, damaged calculators our school has. We borrow calculators from neighboring schools for the exam, but these are usually newer models my students have never worked with before and we often still don’t have enough.
This is not fair to my students. They deserve to have access to all the tools allowed during this exam. They deserve to focus solely on the mathematics being tested without having to teach themselves how to use a new calculator mid-test. They deserve a fair chance to demonstrate all that they’ve learned. Most of all, they deserve to be assessed on what they know, not on what resources they have. By donating to this project, you will help give my students a fair chance to pass this crucial exam and let them know they deserve to succeed.
