Our school is an at-risk school, serving students (many of whom are homeless) living at or below the poverty level. This summer program gives them a safe place to be as well as provides breakfast and lunch throughout the summer. The students learn about water conservation in the desert and collect water samples from various water sites in Las Vegas, and then using the scientific method, analyze the water samples. Many of these students have never had to opportunity to see a real microscope, much less the wonders a microscope reveals. After visiting several water sites and doing research, the students present research projects at the end of the summer session.
