I have students who come to me with a wide range of needs. I have students who can read at the high school level, and I have students who read at the first grade level. To meet the needs of all of my students is critical. One important piece is to make sure students have access to text that will help them grow as readers. As a language arts teacher, I know that a love for reading is the foundation of any reading program. That is where book bins come in. I want each of my own students to have their own book bin where we can store books at their independent reading level. We really focus on choosing "just right" books in my class. Having a bin filled with "just right" books will help my students use their time wisely during independent read time. When it is time to read, they grab their bin and get started. No more wandering around "looking" for their book or just flipping through pretending to read some random book because they don't know where their book went. I also utilize guided reading groups in my class. We are having a difficult time mentally preparing for guided reading without a proper space. That is where a kidney table will come in. Having a designated, small group space will allow me to meet with students everyday. This will become a space of teamwork, focus and learning. Students will be able to learn from the teacher and one another.
