  • Graphic Novels for High School English Classroom Library 4

    Funded Mar 25, 2025

Thank you so much for believing in this project!

Last year, I started one of my new favorite parts of the day—independent reading time! I love to read, and I usually encourage my students to read when they finish their assignments, but to this point, I haven't had the opportunity to designate a specific time during the class period as reading time.

The independent reading time has completely changed my classroom! We are all reading at the start of class, and then throughout the class period, students are now willingly picking up books and continuing to read! They are talking about books and recommending books to each other! It is THE BEST transformation, and it makes me so happy!

I truly appreciate YOU, generous donors, for allowing me to have these exciting, important conversations with my students about books by providing us with some awesome new options to share with one another.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Seal

  • Poetry Month Supplies & Prizes: Promoting Creativity in High School

    Funded Mar 21, 2025

Last year's Poetry Month celebration was such a huge success that we were thrilled to start planning for it again this year! Last year, however, I had some grant money to help fund the supplies and the prizes we would award. Unfortunately this year, I didn't have that luxury!

Thanks to Donors Choose, we now have a great start on all the supplies we'll need to promote poetry writing, creativity, and self-expression throughout the month of April.

It's amazing to see what kids can and will do when you let them get creative! Because of your support, Poetry Month is for sure going to be a success yet again this year!”

  • Sports Stories for Reluctant Readers in HS English

    Funded Mar 17, 2025

Thank you so much for believing in this project!

Last year, I started my new favorite part of the day--10 minutes of reading time to begin each of my classes! I love to read, and I usually encourage my students to read when they finish their assignments, but to this point, I haven't had the opportunity to designate a specific time during the class period as reading time.

The independent reading time completely changed my classroom! We all read for 10 minutes at the start of class each day, and then throughout the class period, students would willingly picking up books and continue to read! They talked about books and recommended books to each other! It was THE BEST transformation, and it made me so happy!

This semester I have some reluctant readers who are very interested in both sports and graphic novels--neither of which are categories of books I have a ton of. This project fulfills one of those needs!

I truly appreciate YOU, generous donors, for allowing me to have these exciting, important conversations with my students about books by providing us with some awesome new options to share with one another.”

  • Renew NCTE Membership to Continue Professional Learning

    Funded Feb 23, 2025

As a teacher, I believe in modeling the behavior I want my students to demonstrate. One of those key behaviors is curiosity--a genuine desire to learn more and to continuously improve in everything I do. That's the behavior at the heart of this project.

After ten years of teaching, I could very easily sit back and rely on my experiences, but instead of doing that, I'm constantly trying to learn more, to improve my teaching practice, and to keep up with the trends in English and in education.

NCTE is such an excellent resource in helping me do just that. Thanks to you, I'll be able to continue modeling positive behavior for my students!”

  • Classroom Essentials for HS English

    Funded Dec 15, 2024

I always struggle with getting and staying organized and helping my students do the same. In high school English, it's especially tough because there are always so many writing assignments, stories, and other handouts.

These supplies are some of the essential high school English supplies. Thanks to you, we will have plenty of our essentials for the upcoming semester—so many that I probably won't need to purchase any of my own supplies for the rest of the year.

Thank you so much for believing in this project!”

    With gratitude,

  • Updates to Flexible Seating in High School English

    Funded Feb 18, 2025

I am so excited to be adding these chairs and slip covers to my classroom so that my students have additional flexible seating options in our classroom! I can't wait for my students to get to utilize them this semester. They go perfectly with the (also Donors Choose funded) table I have and will be an awesome place for group work!

Flexible seating has made such a difference in my classroom, in terms of both comfortability of all of my students and collaboration among them. I'm thrilled to continue adding to our already awesome flexible seating options to make our classroom even more complete.

Thank you for believing in us!”

  • Let’s Write: Journal Notebooks & Personalizing Stickers for HS English

    Funded Dec 29, 2024

Thank you so much for helping me get my students to write!

The goal for this project was to get students excited about writing by offering them fun journal prompts to start each class period. They have really loved getting to express their opinions through their writing, which has translated into them writing better essays!

They have also loved being able to decorate and personalize their own individual journals with the stickers!

Thank you so much for believing in me, my students, and our classroom!”

  • Cleaning Supplies, No Bugs, & New Scents in HS English

    Funded Dec 26, 2024

All of these supplies have come in handy already! We don't always have all the supplies we need to clean up after ourselves or stay healthy, but thanks to you, we do now!

We have used the paper towels to clean up the inevitable messes, bug spray to ensure we're keeping the environment sanitary, and Clorox wipes and Swiffer dusters as a quick and easy way to clean and dust our classroom surfaces.

The scented items make sure our classroom smells clean and fresh.

Thank you so much for believing in this project and my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Seal

My students are the kindest, most determined, hardest working people I know. Many of them face great adversity in their homes and in their daily lives, yet they come to school each day willing to learn and to do their best. I love my students more than I can explain, and once they've been in my class, they are forever "my kids." Because of my love for my students, I'm tough on them, but they rise to each challenge I set before them. I primarily teach 10th graders, but I also teach some upperclassmen in Dual Credit English Composition as well. We are a Title 1 school with over 90% of students receiving free/reduced lunch. My students are a very diverse group--they live in varied locations, including inside the city and out in the county, they have diverse family situations, and their backgrounds are also diverse--but despite their differences, they come together to form the #1 high school in our state!
