  • Graphic Novels for High School English Classroom Library

    Funded Apr 4, 2025

Thank you so much for believing in this project for my students, our classroom, and our classroom library!

Many of my students this semester are reluctant readers--and some of them haven't read a book in its entirety in years. Because of that, their reading comprehension, reading stamina, and vocabulary are greatly lacking.

English 2 in Mississippi is a state-tested class, which means students must pass the state test to graduate. There are so many things that just practicing reading can help these students with. Thanks to you, my students have more options to choose from in our classroom library--options that they will actually read!

I appreciate you and your generosity SO much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Seal

  • Sports Books for High School English Classroom Library

    Funded Apr 4, 2025

Thank you so much for your generosity and support of this project!

Typically in my classes, I have a lot of girls who love the same types of books that I do. We usually bond over our shared love of similar books, and building a classroom library has been pretty easy for me.

In the past couple of years, my classes have increasingly become filled with male student-athletes--a population which my classroom library is really under-representing.

Thanks to you and your kindness, my boys will have a ton of awesome new options to choose from for our independent reading time! I'm so excited to show them the new "sports" section of the classroom library--so thank you!”

Thank you so much for your generosity and support of this project!

Historically, I've taught a lot of girls who love the same types of books that I do, so building my classroom library has been easy for me.

  • Graphic Novels for High School English Classroom Library 6

    Funded Mar 30, 2025

Your generosity in support of my students and our classroom is something I'm so grateful for. A ton of my current students are reluctant readers, but they are actually genuinely enjoying the graphic novel options I have in my classroom. Unfortunately, I didn't previously have many options to offer them.

Thanks to your kindness, I now have a ton of new options to suggest to them, based on the books they've already enjoyed. One of my favorite things is connecting with students through their book choice and hearing them finally excited about a book they've read.

Because of you, I'll now be able to have more of these conversations. For that, I'm so grateful!”

  • Graphic Novels for Boys: Promoting Reading in High School English

    Funded Mar 30, 2025

I'm SO excited about the funding of this project! My students are absolutely loving graphic novels this semester--especially my boys who are reluctant readers. This project is giving my students the opportunity to have additional graphic novel options to choose from.

So many of my students haven't read a book in YEARS when they get to my classroom. Every single day, I attempt to change their reading behaviors by encouraging independent reading in my classroom with a designated time for reading.

Because of your generosity, my students will have additional graphic novel options, and I'm so thankful!”

  • Graphic Novels for High School English Classroom Library

    Funded Mar 30, 2025

Thank you so much for your support of this project--I'm thrilled to be able to build up the graphic novel section of my classroom library, thanks to your generosity!

This semester, I have a lot of students who haven't read a book in its entirety in years. Often, this is because they are struggling readers. Each day at the beginning of my class period, my students have independent reading time because the best way to improve reading skills is to practice reading. So many of my struggling readers are gravitating toward graphic novels!

The images are helpful to students because they help them make sense of what they're reading...plus, it keeps them engaged and WANTING to read! I count that as a win--so I'm trying to continue leaning into their interests.

    I'm so appreciative of you!”

  • Harry Potter Graphic Novels for High School English Classroom Library

    Funded Mar 30, 2025

Thank you so much for believing in this project for my students and our classroom!

Each day, we start our class period with independent reading time, where students read a text of their choice. This practice helps build reading skills and also improve reading stamina, which is something so many of my students lack when they get into my classroom.

I absolutely love Harry Potter, and my students are really loving graphic novels this semester, so this was the perfect way to combine those two things--Harry Potter graphic novels!

Thank you so much for believing in us!”

  • Art Supplies and Candy Incentives for High School English

    Funded Mar 27, 2025

These art supplies and candy incentives will be so helpful to us during our Poetry Month celebration! Last year's Poetry Month celebration was such a huge success that we were thrilled to start planning for it again this year. Last year, however, I had some grant money to help fund the supplies and the prizes we would award. Unfortunately this year, I didn't have that luxury!

Thanks to Donors Choose, we now have the supplies we'll need to promote poetry writing, creativity, and self-expression throughout the month of April.

It's amazing to see what kids can and will do when you let them get creative! Because of your support, Poetry Month is for sure going to be a success yet again this year!”

  • Graphic Novels for High School English Classroom Library 2

    Funded Mar 26, 2025

Thank you so much for believing in this project!

Last year, I started one of my new favorite parts of the day—independent reading time! I love to read, and I usually encourage my students to read when they finish their assignments, but to this point, I haven't had the opportunity to designate a specific time during the class period as reading time.

The independent reading time has completely changed my classroom! We are all reading at the start of class, and then throughout the class period, students are now willingly picking up books and continuing to read! They are talking about books and recommending books to each other! It is THE BEST transformation, and it makes me so happy!

I truly appreciate YOU, generous donors, for allowing me to have these exciting, important conversations with my students about books by providing us with some awesome new options to share with one another.”

My students are the kindest, most determined, hardest working people I know. Many of them face great adversity in their homes and in their daily lives, yet they come to school each day willing to learn and to do their best. I love my students more than I can explain, and once they've been in my class, they are forever "my kids." Because of my love for my students, I'm tough on them, but they rise to each challenge I set before them. I primarily teach 10th graders, but I also teach some upperclassmen in Dual Credit English Composition as well. We are a Title 1 school with over 90% of students receiving free/reduced lunch. My students are a very diverse group--they live in varied locations, including inside the city and out in the county, they have diverse family situations, and their backgrounds are also diverse--but despite their differences, they come together to form the #1 high school in our state!
