I teach in a low income public high school in Southern California. More than 60% of the student population receive free and reduced lunches. We have a large population of English Language Learners. We also have a very diverse student population. Despite these obstacles, we are a high achieving school with an API over 800. Our science departments is one of the best in the county. We try hard to inspire our students to achieve. We create lessons that are engaging and challenging. I teach an entry level science class made up of at risk, special education, and regular ed freshman. I also teach two periods of Zoology which is comprised of 10th-12th grade students of all academic levels. Our students have a desire to learn but often need something to help bring that desire out of them. Something to want them to do well in class. To complete their work and have a sense of achievement.
