Giving each student a copy of The Alchemist to read and do a book study with, will give them a connection to going to visit different colleges in the Greater Ls Angeles area. This book is perfect for this age group, because it talks about one's personal journey in life, and they are the critical age where they are standing at a fork in the road trying to figure out who they are. Many of my students will be able to relate to the main character in the book, and apply this relation to their own lives. Our school is located in a gang ridden part of Long Beach, and these kids see A LOT going on in their neighborhoods that they have to figure out how to navigate through. Instilling a love for figuring out their personal journey is paramount to becoming leaders of their communities.
