Relatable Stories that Enhance the Reading Experience
Funded Oct 21, 2021Because of your generosity, all classes have a set of books to read and actually be hands-on with. The students have been immersed in these stories and are enjoying the process. We learn new vocabulary prior to reading a new chapter. We have discussions about character development and settings. This is their favorite part of reading because they all seem to relate to a character or just enjoy learning about them! The Outsiders, We Beat the Street and Holes all have relatable characters that they are enjoying because of your contributions! Once again, thank you for believing in the power of reading.”

Funded Oct 12, 2020This pandemic has tired everyone out. The lack of socialization has been tough. We have many days when everyone is quarantined and the students cannot interact with one another. Working in the gardens this school year has been extremely difficult. The garden is such a great outlet for us and we barely get to spend time out there. The few days we have managed have been great. Hopefully the next school year allows us to get things back to how they were, full of fruits, full of vegetables, full of laughter and full of dirt.”

Gratitude and Graduation
Funded May 11, 2020Today was an incredibly special day thanks to you! I, along with other teachers and para's have not been able to physically see our students. Their parents were amazing throughout this process and kept the gift exchange a secret! They too were extremely grateful. When our students showed up at the school, they were shocked to see us as we celebrated them! The gifts you all helped me give them were placed in reusable bags and passed out. I added a few treats in there along with custom made t-shirts. Hopefully the items WE all provided them help them stay connected with their families during these times. May these gifts help them process all that is going on, provide a peaceful environment and keep them engaged!”

S.T.E.P.ping into the Kitchen
Funded May 9, 2019First and foremost, thank you for your donations. The students are always excited when we are able to try new things. The cooking items were the most exciting thus far. We were able to make our first batch of spaghetti sauce! The pasta was so yummy! We wish you all could try it with us. We made everything from scratch, using ingredients grown from our very own garden. Living a healthy lifestyle is something the teachers in this unit try to emphasize. Your donations contribute to that. We are able to teach the necessary life skills that contribute to the betterment of their futures. So thank you, very much. Your donations have a lifelong impact.”

S.T.E.P.S. Garden Crew
Funded Mar 23, 2019Thank you for your constant support. The students have been maintaining their garden, selling their produce and eating their vegetables! The students love selling their fresh produce to the staff. They have such a sense of pride. They have been working hard on their communication skills. They are getting stronger with their math skills. Many are not as shy as they once were because of the constant interaction they get from their peers and teachers around the campus. As a unit, we are always trying to push our students to their full potential. It may just seem like a simple garden, but it is more than that. It improves their lives in many different ways.”

S.T.E.P.(s) Into Our Garden
Funded Feb 28, 2019When I told my students that our project got funded, they were so excited! During our weekly CBI (community based instruction) trip, we went to Lowe's and made our purchase. We were able to get all the soil, mulch and watering cans we needed! Once we returned to school, all the students carried the supplies straight their garden and got to work. We filled the garden beds, pulled weeds, spread mulch on the paths and trimmed all the plants. Once everyone was done with their specific job, they watered their garden. As a group, they took inventory of what was growing and how much product we could expect. Since this activity, they have been selling their produce to the staff/faculty of their school. Our teachers and students throughout the campus are very supportive. When selling their product, not only does the money continue to fund the upkeep of their garden, they are learning budgeting skills. Managing money helps them learn daily life skills. The teamwork helps build social and communication skills. I always allow student driven instruction and this helps them build leadership skills. Who would have thought that a simple garden would help develop so many skills other than setting a seed? Thank you for your support!”
