  • A Bilingual Library: Building Book Love

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

Thank you so much for helping fund this project. My classroom sees many faces throughout the day: 15 first graders, 8 second graders, and 9 third graders. I also have two groups that consist of 14 kindergarten students. All of these children are native Spanish speakers, and they LOVE these books. They look forward to independent reading time every Friday when they can grab a book, find a spot around the room, and read a new story in both their native tongue and attempt to decipher the meaning in English. Kindergarten has enjoyed looking through pictures and telling the story visually. I have never seen them so excited about reading!

My para is bilingual, and she has read them many of these stories in both English and Spanish, increasing their comprehension, engagement, fluency, and vocabulary. Of all the things in my classroom, these books are the things we are most thankful for!

By far my greatest appreciation is the literacy is now allowed to take place in the home. My second and third graders have checked out a book every night to take home. They tell me their cousin, their dad, their grandma, their uncle, etc. have read with them (because they are only literate in Spanish), and it is so exciting knowing that they now have the opportunity to read together- something that is so important to their success in school. Thank you so much for your contribution!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lane

  • Diversity in Literature

    Funded Mar 26, 2019

Thank you so much for your gracious donation to support bringing Diversity into our classroom. My students are currently in the middle of the Diversity unit and they are devouring their books! I have never seen so many students as excited to read as my students are each day when they come into class. In fact, I have 12 students who have already finished the first book and moved on to read the second (since they were originally given choices). The love for literature is definitely growing in this classroom, and I could not have provided this opportunity without you! I can see the amount of empathy, caring, and understanding increasing each and every day. We are exploring many topics and having some great conversations about what life looks like from a plethora of perspectives, and both my students and I want to tell you how thankful we are for your support.”

    With gratitude,

The ping-pong balls, cotton balls, solo cups, straws, smarties, shaving cream, duct tape, spaghetti, bean-bags, and empty Kleenex boxes will serve as materials for the weekly challenges. Think Minute to Win It challenges, but adapted to fit! The scissors are to allow students to aid in the process of creating the weekly slips. The materials donated will make grammar exercises even more exciting and more hands-on! The bandanas are for students to wear as a visual reminder of the teams and to simulate the atmosphere of Survivor. The goal each week is to be the winning team to earn immunity and a small incentive, such as the candy that is requested. The setup of each challenge is similar. Students from each team take turns answering grammar questions verbally, on the board, on a sheet of paper, or on their desk that is smeared with shaving cream (specifically for punctuation exercises). When the student answers correct, (s)he will move to the challenge portion of the activity. The challenges change weekly, but a few examples are as follows: 1) after a correct answer, student will pick up a ping-pong ball with a spoon and run across the room to their team's bowl. The ball must stay on the spoon until they reach another bowl to place it in. The first team to 10 wins. 2) After a correct answer, student uses a bean-bag as a token for an interactive tic-tac-toe board that is crafted out of 6 large hula-hoops. The goal is to be the first team to tic-tac-toe. These examples are just snapshots of the challenges. Once the student completes the challenge, the next student in line attempts the answer and the challenge. This continues until each team member has participated and a team meets the designated amount to win.
