We began a new behavior system that incorporates financial literacy in our 7th and 8th grade classes this year called, The Classroom Economy. Students are assigned jobs in which they complete daily and are paid a monthly salary for their work. Students must keep a bank log which helps them to become financially responsible. Additionally, students can earn money for good behavior, answering questions in class, and showing kindness, etc. Students collect their money and deposit into our banking system we have set up in the classroom. Students have to learn to manage money as they must pay "rent" for their desks and an "electricity bill." Students must pay "fines" for inappropriate behavior. Our students are PUMPED about this program, and we have seen an improvement in classroom behavior and responsibility! The improvement is due to the fact that if they have managed their money wisely and stayed out of trouble, they get to attend an "auction" and can spend their "money" on various items available. Items such as gift cards, candy bars, shirts, games, sports equipment, and phone accessories are things that students will want to purchase at the auction. Having items, as listed above, available will encourage all students to be responsible and excited about the opportunity to spend their hard earned money in this real life experience.
