The Boomwhacker project would be a way to teach my class how to read and produce music in a cost effective way. We have not had music education for two years due to budget cuts. Over a decade of research has proven that music education is critical to a child's brain development. "Music, as we know, is one of the most powerful means available to further human development and build great communities and societies. Neuroscience research also now shows us that music education is a very powerful tool for attaining a child's full intellectual, social and creative potential," said Dr. Peter Simon, President and CEO, The Royal Conservatory of Music." (The Benefits of Music Education: An Overview of Current Neuroscience Research. May 7, 2014) The Boomwhacker Project would tap into my students' cultural traditions of music and dance, giving them the ability to express themselves authentically, and it would open the door to future music programs in middle and high school. Music is every child's right. Its benefits on brain development, creativity, critical thinking and health are proven. My students do not get formal music education and the opportunities afforded to some for private music lessons. This project would serve to create a more equitable situation that would allow my children the same benefits as those who get formal music education. Because I have music training, I would be able to teach my students how to read and play music with the Boomwhackers. My goal is to provide music education two days a week and private lessons for those who would like more time. This training would also be preparation for performance opportunities that we have school-wide a few times a year. Thank you for considering my project. I look forward to sharing our progress with donors!
