This summer, I have been working hard on becoming the best reading teacher I can be. I have painted my classroom, attended professional developments, and read many books on teaching reading and classroom management. What has inspired me most are the books on getting kids to love reading. In today's world, books are losing their place. They have to compete with Snapchat, Instagram, ps4s, you name it. I have watched kids pretend to read for too long. I have been inspired by the ideas in Donalyn Miller's Reading in the Wild and Gordon Berit's No More Fake Reading. I am so excited to implement their ideas and watch students fall in love with books. It is all about getting popular books into their hands and having them crank out a large volume of books. It's about giving them choice instead of forcing them through our beloved classics (although the concept is to still use these to model skills, which in turn will make some students choose them when they are picking books!). There is a huge amount of data that supports this approach. Please help me inspire kids to ignore their phones, because they really want to read that next chapter, by donating some books to my classroom library. I'm afraid they won't be interested in the old Nancy Drew's I have in there now.
