My 2nd grade class has twenty-five to thirty eager to learn children. My class is filled with personality! We do not have any dull moments and I encourage my students to think outside the box while learning. Students in my classroom are involved in small group and large group instruction daily. We are a Title I school in a small city in northern Oklahoma. Our school has many special education classrooms including an early childhood training skills lab, a severe and profound classroom, a behavior classroom, and an early intervention autism program. Throughout the school year students from our special education programs are integrated in classes with typical peers. A quote by Kate DiCamillo says, "Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." Reading is not something I use as punishment in my classroom; in fact, I often use reading as a reward. Throughout my first two years of teaching, I've felt successful in helping kids grow to learn reading.
