Fund a 3D Printer for Kids With Visual Impairments
Funded Nov 3, 2019Thank you so much for supporting our classroom. I have been using the 3D printer to make materials for my students.
My students have visual impairments and are in typical classroom settings. Their classroom teachers use images to teach skills. Using this 3D printer, I can make tactile models of the images for my students.
In one of the pictures, you will see a model of a trout. My student's science teacher is growing trout in the classroom. It is difficult for my student to touch the trout in a way that provides access to the information that the other students access visually. I made the model using the 3D printer so that he could feel the parts of the baby trout as the teacher discusses it.
One of the other pictures is of a strand of DNA. This was also a diagram used in his science class. By making the DNA for him, he had access to the visual information in the textbook.
Your donation is improving access for all my students.”

Help Us Make Hallway Braille Learning Fabulous
Funded Oct 20, 2019Thank you so much for supporting my students. I work with a wide range of ages with children in their classrooms and in their homes. Your support with this, my first Donors Choose, has left me full of gratitude.
I pull students from their classroom to work 1:1 with them not only on learning braille but also with other skills. Because space in NYC schools is used in multiple, inventive ways throughout the day, I needed a workspace that I could set up and take down at the end of the day. You funded a table that I could easily roll away and chairs that stack up. Additionally, the materials that kids with visual impairment use take up lots and lots of space. You funded a cart that I can store all my students' materials.
One major part of my job is to adapt materials. The Picture in a Flash (PIAF) paper that you funded will allow me to make tactile maps and diagrams for my students. The tactile diagram in the picture I have attached is showing moon phases. It was created on the PIAF machine with paper that you funded!
The iPad Pro has been a really amazing tool for me to use with my students. The Apple Pencil makes it easy for my students with motor needs to access the iPad. The screen is so large that my students with functional vision are able to access materials more efficiently.
I appreciate you so, so much.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Hooper
