As 6th graders, it is incredibly hard to find books that are interesting, thought provoking, or appropriate for lower level readers. The books that are written at those lower levels are directed to a much younger age group or are far too basic to allow my 6th graders to develop an attachment to the story, its characters, and, in turn, build higher level literacy skills. My students are uniquely different, talented, and inquisitive. All of them have varying academic and social strengths that weave into the fabric of our room, building the family environment where our differences are respected, cultivated, and nurtured. Our family is in need of age appropriate and leveled texts that use literacy to bring key concepts to life while promoting academic conversations. Since the majority of my students thrive on making meaningful relationships in the classroom that positively impact their socio-emotional growth, they need the chance to mirror that same growth academically by being exposed to literature that reflects the world they know and harnesses those relationships to increase literacy skills.
