Flexible seating will allow all of my students, regardless of their learning style, ability level, or impulsivity to achieve and exceed their goals. These different seatings will allow students to expel energy without disturbing their peers. They will give students opportunities for movement while they are engaging with their classmates and studies. In 2016, Steelcase Education funded a study, which showed that classrooms designed to support participative learning increased student engagement compared to traditional row-by-column seating (Scott-Webber, Strickland, and Kapitula).
A recent article in Psychology Today lists some of the benefits of flexible seating: burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
