  • Building Our Social Emotional Library

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Inhale, exhale, take 5 big belly breaths, say the problem, name your feeling, choose a solution - those are all social and emotional skills that we teach our students using the SecondStep curriculum. Each week has a focus skill and lessons are taught using puppets, picture cards and large and small group activities. Each week we like to read a book that corresponds to the theme and now we have a whole library of the recommended readings to reinforce the most valuable skills we teach in preschool.”

  • Count Us In

    Funded Apr 18, 2024

Look at the excitement on Hugo's face as he helped me open our new math materials thanks to your donation to this project. Young children learn best with hands on materials and these counting boxes are helping our children learn to count and recognize the corresponding numeral. We are also exposing some of our higher level friends to beginning addition and subtraction with the manipulatives and the Pop & Add game. The counting sets keep our students engaged with various themed materials throughout the year. These counting sets have been on my wishlist for years. Thank you so much for making this dream come true!”

  • Dress It Up!

    Funded May 4, 2024

Dramatic play has to be one of a preschooler's favorite place to work and play and now it is even more fun thanks to your donation. Our class is full of little chefs, doctors, construction workers, mamas, daddies, grannies and grandpas this year.

By dressing up in dramatic play young children are pretending and practicing for their future roles as adults. They role play scenarios they see in their home and community and that gives us an important opportunity to teach corresponding social and emotional skills. We are looking forward to another great year of acting out our futures.”

  • A Little Bit of Everything

    Funded Apr 19, 2024

My students have had the best times with the materials in the project. It is truly a Little Bit of Everything as the materials live in our art, science, literacy and math centers as well as our library. Our students have enjoyed counting, creating, experimenting, writing and sleuthing since we received the items in late spring.

Their favorite item so far has been the Scoop-A-Bug. It was very relevant as we learned about insects in spring and they loved using the scoops to catch the bugs and sort by color and type.”

  • Journaling Our Way Through PreK 2024!

    Funded Jun 7, 2024

We just completed our first journal entry of the school year! Our preschoolers are placing stickers on the first letter of their name and then tracing and copying their full name. I hope you can see the varying developmental stages of writing that we have in our classroom and the pride the children have in their work.

Writing is hard work for tiny hands. But through practice they will get better every day. And, hopefully, they will all be independently writing their name and other words by the time they get to kindergarten.”

  • Take It Outside!

    Funded Dec 18, 2023

Oh my goodness I wish pictures could better portray the joy my students have had since rolling out our new outdoor cart! They love having easy access to balls, shovels, buckets and chalk right now. And they're doing an excellent job of cleaning up when it's time to go inside. They even love helping to roll it out to the playground and back in at the end of the day. Some children who were previously bored with the same old playground equipment are excited and engaged in gross motor play again. It's so wonderful because that active play gets the brain ready to learn in the classroom!”

  • Journaling Our Way Through PreK!

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

We're three weeks into school and my students already love their journals! They're excited to each have their own very special book to show their families all the progress that they will make at the end of the year. Our first project was to make our letter out of stickers, their letter being the first letter of their name. At the bottom of the page they traced then wrote their name.

Throughout the year we will continue to draw our ideas, trace or write descriptions of our work and show evidence of our ability to count, sort, retell stories and describe what we have learned. Our journals will have counting apples and pumpkins, illustrations of life cycles, pictures of what we remember from The Old Lady and Turkey books and so much more!”

  • Relax, Retreat, and Restore in Pre K

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

We are already seeing so many benefits from our new cozy cube! Friends who are having big feelings have learned to use the cube and the tools inside to bring themselves down to an appropriate level. I have friends who ask to use it when they miss their families and can't control their bodies. I even have a friend from an older class who visits our class as a reward and uses the cozy cube to calm himself down. Most recently, my student with multiple disabilities found her way to the cozy cube and productively engaged with the calming materials inside. This was the most functional activity this child has selected on her own this year - amazing!

We cannot thank you enough for your generosity. It has made our classroom a more peaceful place to be.”

  • Organize Our Mess

    Funded Dec 10, 2021

My teacher brain, body and heart have so much peace right now! I know it seems like a small thing, but having an organized classroom keeps me a little more sane, making me a better teacher to my students. It is easier for us all to get to our wonderful classroom materials, so I am more easily able to rotate materials to keep my students excited and engaged. This week I've quickly been able to access new blocks, phones, musical instruments, magnifying glasses, flashlights, stickers and collage materials for my students. They're staying busy and I'm staying calm!”

  • Bring Dramatic Play to the 21st Century

    Funded Jan 14, 2022

Oh my goodness, when the packages arrived my students could not wait until the materials were available. As I unboxed the blender, mixer, coffee pot and smart phones they stood around me, anxious with excitement. Since they've been in our dramatic play center, I've been served smoothies, pancakes and ketchup coffee! My students have loved chatting and texting on the phones, taking selfies and showing me their "social media posts." They're re-enacting what they see at home and learning important social and emotional skills while having fun!”

My students are awesome! I teach at a Title I school that has a high percentage of English language learners. My preschool students qualify based on having a disability or being a part of a family with low income, but that doesn't stop them. They are enthusiastic learners and love to brag about how ready they are for kindergarten. I also have some of the best families. They wholeheartedly support me as their children's teacher and value their children's education. Together, we are able to achieve great outcomes for our littlest learners at Mary Todd Elementary. Speaking of Mary Todd, it is a great school to teach at. Everyone supports and values each other and goes above and beyond to help our families who rely on us for much more than their children's education. I'm proud to be a Mary Todd bulldog!
