  • Flex seating

    Funded May 9, 2022

Me and my students are using the resource as flexible seating in the media center. The media center needs renovation and up-to-date furniture to make the environment more pleasing.

When the students first saw the seats they were surprised and ready to sit on on them. They said the seats are very comfortable and great to use at the desktop computers.

Next steps is to continue with projects with flexible seating and tables to turn the media center into a more collaborative space. We at Western Guilford High School thank you for your donations to help us achieve this goal.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Monroe-Leach

  • Battling Books

    Funded Mar 17, 2022

Thank you so much for donating to the Western Guilford battle the books team. These books mean so much to the students were they able to read and then compete against other schools in the district. Students read these titles and able to quiz each other on in which book question format. After the competition these great books will be added to circulation for students to check out and my battle of the books team will create a buzz about how good these books are for other students to be able to read.”

  • Breathe Better

    Funded Jan 26, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations toward the Breathe Better project. These Dehumidifier have started to change the atmosphere of the media center. The machine is helping to clean the air and reduces and maintains humidity levels in the media center. Humidity and books are not a good combination. That is why your donations are so important! We don't have the funding to do a full renovation of the media center, so I must do small projects to renovate it myself. I hope you have a great day and think about all the good you have done. Again, thank you for your donations.”

  • Flex Seating for Reading

    Funded Jan 10, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations toward the Flex Seating project. These stools have started to change the atmosphere of the media center. The students like using the stools to seat at the computers or to do work at one of the tables. Our furniture is straight out of the 70s. Chairs are starting to break down and that can be a real safety issue. That is why your donations are so important! We don't have the funding to do a full renovation of the media center, so I must do small projects to renovate it myself. I hope you have a great day and think about all the good you have done. Again, thank you for your donations.”

  • Joy of Reading

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Many of our donors love to read books, well we do, too! I have taught lessons to the students then at the end of the lesson do a book highlight. The booklight spotlights a new arrival book and tell a little bit of what it is about.

Reading in the media center is not open due to Covid 19, but books are still circulating. Students have a opportunity to do Curbside Checkout. Curbside Checkout is where students connect the media specialist with a book or books request through calling, email, or putting books on hold. The media specialist will then pull those requested books and have them ready for pickup.

All ages are enjoying the books thanks to you and your generous hearts.”

Hi, my name is Angelina Monroe. I’m 16 and I love to read. Being the daughter of a middle school librarian, I’ve always been around books, whether that was books from the public library or books from my mom’s school. At first, I was an avid reader of fiction, reading books like “Pinkalicious” and “Dork Diaries”. As I started to age, I realized that not many of the stories that I had read reflected my lifestyle as a multi-racial child in a then single parent household. So, I turned my attention to non-fiction, reading about various countries and about engineering. Of course, I read all the required readings we had to do for class and I did like graphic novels like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, but I dedicated most of my free time reading nonfiction just because I didn’t feel the connection I was supposed to feel with the fiction characters. In high school, I came across an article about a girl named Marley Dias, a 13-year-old girl who decided to collect books that show black female leads and was able to collect 1000 books with the help of her friends and family. That lead me to think “What would it take to collect books that have positive and encouraging multicultural lead characters in fiction books?”- Angelina Monroe I call it the Multicultural Literacy Project: Building Amazing Libraries. With your kind donations, you can help me collect fiction books with multicultural leads for our students to look up to.Now through December 31, 2018, donations can be made through Donors Choose. Donor Choose will start it off with 40 books. You can also donate books by sending the books to Media Services at 501 W. Washington Street Greensboro, NC 27401 in care of the Multicultural Literacy Project: Building Amazing Libraries.
