Hi, my name is Angelina Monroe. I’m 16 and I love to read. Being the daughter of a middle school librarian, I’ve always been around books, whether that was books from the public library or books from my mom’s school. At first, I was an avid reader of fiction, reading books like “Pinkalicious” and “Dork Diaries”. As I started to age, I realized that not many of the stories that I had read reflected my lifestyle as a multi-racial child in a then single parent household. So, I turned my attention to non-fiction, reading about various countries and about engineering. Of course, I read all the required readings we had to do for class and I did like graphic novels like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, but I dedicated most of my free time reading nonfiction just because I didn’t feel the connection I was supposed to feel with the fiction characters. In high school, I came across an article about a girl named Marley Dias, a 13-year-old girl who decided to collect books that show black female leads and was able to collect 1000 books with the help of her friends and family. That lead me to think “What would it take to collect books that have positive and encouraging multicultural lead characters in fiction books?”- Angelina Monroe I call it the Multicultural Literacy Project: Building Amazing Libraries. With your kind donations, you can help me collect fiction books with multicultural leads for our students to look up to.Now through December 31, 2018, donations can be made through Donors Choose. Donor Choose will start it off with 40 books. You can also donate books by sending the books to Media Services at 501 W. Washington Street Greensboro, NC 27401 in care of the Multicultural Literacy Project: Building Amazing Libraries.
