  • New Underpants, A Dog Man, Some Kung-Fu Cavemen... And More.

    Funded Jan 9, 2019

Thank you for putting books in the hands of our kids. Few of them ever go to a bookshop or to the public library - but they are very keen to read. When new books arrive in the library, I put them on the shelves immediately. That means that I can't mention them on the school announcements until the next morning. Usually, those new books are gone before I can even make an announcement about them. That means that the kids who discover the new books (and they always do: they seem to have a sixth sense) are spreading the news to their friends by word of mouth. And those friends come running to the library. Quite literally. These kids love to read and, by donating to a school library on Donors Choose, you are doing a lot of good. THANK YOU from all our young readers!”

    Dr. Pearson

  • Heroes Arise: Believing in Your Dreams!

    Funded Oct 26, 2018

Thank you so much for My Hero Academia! Some middle schoolers, who are fans of the TV show, started checking these books out. As always, they were quickly imitated by the fourth and fifth graders. Now, My Hero Academia is the most widely circulated manga in the library. Nothing gets our kids reading like comic books. The children come running to the library each morning to check their favorite comics out before school begins, and the library Suggestion Box is full of requests for new comics / manga. Thank you! You've made a lot of kids very happy.”

  • Library Books for 400 Very Young, Voracious Readers!

    Funded Aug 28, 2018

Thank you so much for financing this project. The new books have been snatched up by teachers! That's good. They use them for class projects, which helps popularize them among the kids.

Several of the new 'Pete the Cat' books went to a Pre-K teacher. She has always been a 'Pete' fan. She'll be showing her electronic 'Pete the Cat' books over the class smart board.

The Eric Carle books have gone to a veteran FIrst Grade teacher who, every year, when the kids read 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' as part of the curriculum, likes to introduce them to other Eric Carle books, too. Normally, I order those books from the public library. What a pleasure to be able to offer her these wonderful Eric Carle titles, right here from our own library!”

  • Sure-Fire Success: Popular Books For 8 -14 Year-Olds

    Funded Oct 10, 2018

Your books arrived in the library today, January 8. The library aides stamped them and were going to put them in a 'New Books' display, but then the third grade arrived and checked out half the titles. I'm sure the other half will be checked out tomorrow. Besides sending you photos tomorrow, I'm also sending our teachers photos, so that they can show pictures of the new titles to the kids, who won't find any of the books but will at least be able to place them on hold. It's really nice to see brand new copies of these stories. Our most popular books have gotten pretty worn over the years. Thanks for invigorating the library. This is a great start to the year!”

  • Comics Crazy!

    Funded Oct 18, 2018

Your Japanese comics have been circulating among the elder children. There's a simple reason for this. The library aides unpack the boxes that come from Donors Choose, so they get first dibs. These seventh and eighth grade helpers have been devouring the new comic books. 'My Neighbor Totoro' and 'Spirited Away' have proved particularly popular. The new titles were all chosen by students. It really promotes student buy-in to the library when the kids can suggest titles for the next Donors Choose project and then see people like yourselves donate those books to the library. Well done! Thank you for promoting a new generation of bibliophiles!”

  • Meltdown In The Library!

    Funded Oct 4, 2018

As soon as we got 'The Meltdown', we barcoded the books and put them on display. They weren't in a prominent place. We put them at the back of the library, in the Fiction section, along with the other 'Wimpy Kid' books.

That was around midday. By the close of school, at three o'clock, all 15 copies of 'The Meltdown' had been checked out. The kids adore the 'Wimpy Kid' novels.

This project, like nearly all our Donors Choose projects, was born out of students' suggestions. Thank you for listening to our kids' wishes and for making them feel at home in THEIR library!”

  • Popular Books For Tiny Tots: Elephants, Piggies and Fly Guys.

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

We bet on a sure-fire winner! We had a few titles from these series in our collection already, and those books were super popular - so it was a no-brainer that the other books in these series would circulate equally well. BRAVO! I think our most important projects are the ones that cater to our smallest library patrons. They need A LOT of books: we have about 100 kids in each of Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade, and kids in these grades check out four or five titles at a time. We always need to acquire new books for the little guys. Thank you so much for keeping the munchkins in mind!”

  • Award-Winning Graphic Novels For Middle Schoolers.

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you for expanding our library's comic book collection! When I took over as librarian, more years ago than I care to admit, our library had few comics. Every year since then, we've gotten more - usually with the help of Donors Choose - and I'm so glad we did. The more comic books we have, the more comic books the kids want. We began with books about super heroes, then transitioned into Manga, but the titles that are causing a stir these days feature everyday stories about kids - often, middle schoolers - like the books that you donated. These are the titles that keep 5th, 6th and 7th graders coming to the library - no mean feat! We all very much appreciate your generosity!”

  • May The Fourth Be With Our Youngling Readers.

    Funded May 11, 2017

Thank you so much for our new 'Star Wars' books! We put them on our best display stand, very close to the library entrance. Our elementary-aged kids check them out every day (usually, first thing in the morning - the busiest time of the day for the library). The books are even better illustrated than I expected, with short, easy-to-read texts. They are particularly popular among the munchkins - and, now that the trailer for 'The Last Jedi' has appeared, the kids are more interested in 'Star Wars' than ever. This was a great gift. Thank you!”

  • Teaching Tolerance With Classic Tales From Janell Cannon

    Funded Nov 2, 2017

Thank you for donating these great books! I called the Second / Third Grade Gifted kids into the library for a special story-time session to introduce them to Janell Cannon. We researched the author online and I read the kids 'Pinduli'. We discussed the books' message about the healing / hurting power of words. The children could really relate the story to their everyday lives. Then we distributed all three books to the children: 'Pinduli', 'Stellaluna' and 'Verdi'. The session went very well. Thank you! These books are wonderful teaching aides.”

This page belongs to 850 students (in around 50 classes) at a K-8 Center in S. Florida. 88% of our kids come from households with below average income. Most of our parents are immigrants from Central / South America and the Caribbean. Typically, they have low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. They don't have the time, money, or command of English for our school to have a thriving PTA. 27% of our students are special needs children, bused to our campus from all over the city. (Profoundly Mentally Handicapped to Learning Disabled, including Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Intellectually Disabled, Autistic, Visually Impaired and Physically Impaired.) The kids love their school library, which serves as both a resource center and a social center – and the library runs on Donors Choose.
