  • Help Our School Recycle!

    Funded Nov 5, 2009

Thanks to you, our library now has recycling containers and a recycling bulletin board.

We decided to put three of your containers in the most used section of the library. We labeled them 'Paper', 'Plastics' and 'Regular Trash'. We put the other two containers, labeled 'Paper' and 'Regular Trash' at the opposite end of the library. The labels are big and bold, and attract the kids' attention.

The children are very fussy about putting the right kind of trash in the right container.

They have been known to correct teachers who don't follow the recycling rules, too.

When I need the containers emptied, I e-mail our fifth grade science teacher, who sends kids down to pick up the trash and take it to the school's central recycling depot.

The children have decorated the recycling bulletin board with their own artwork.

I also post messages from the school's Recycling Committee there.

Last but not least, your donation looks good. Our library is painted a pale blue. The recycling containers are dark blue, and I covered the bulletin board with dark blue paper. The place is looking great!

Your gift has really helped educate the kids - and adults - about recycling. This was truly

    money well spent. ”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Pearson

  • Where Are The Books?

    Funded Oct 26, 2009

Thanks very much for your kind gift.

As you can see from the photos, we used your shelf dividers to organize three sections: the Easy Section, where the little kids' picture books are kept; the Fiction Section, where the bigger students' novels are shelved; and the 700's section.

The library aides dislike shelving books - who wouldn't? That's why they loved your dividers, because they helped them cut down their shelving time by as much as a third. That left them free to read stories to our smaller students - a much better way for them to spend their time in the library.

Best of all, our Principal was so taken by your gift that she is going to buy shelf dividers for the whole of the rest of the library collection. You can't tell how happy the aides and I are with that decision!

Your gift has had a big impact, and is much appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Pearson

  • Holocaust Materials Needed

    Funded Jun 8, 2009

Three classes have used your materials since they arrived. The teachers are particularly taken with 'The Terrible Things'. Before they read the book, two of the teachers did not point out to the students that the book was about the Holocaust. Days later, some of the students realized the true subject of the book. 'The Terrible Things' seems to have a greater impact on the children if you let them realize its true meaning for themselves.

It is especially striking how 'The Terrible Things' helps children understand the importance of speaking up against oppression before it is too late.

The students who read 'The Terrible Things' have since checked out library books on Anne Frank, the Hitler Youth movement, and a history of the Romany People. These books didn't circulate much before, but now they are in demand.

Thank you very much for helping to bring the lessons of the Holocaust to the attention of the children. ”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Pearson

  • Please Take Us On a Magic Carpet Ride!

    Funded Feb 26, 2009

Thanks for the wonderful rug! You can see from the photos how good it looks.

It is great to have a clean, comfortable area where the little kids can sit down for story-time.

The fact that the rug is divided into rectangles really makes it easy to seat the kids - everyone knows which rectangle is theirs. That cuts down on the time we spend seating the munchkins before the stories. The kids just come in, sit down on their assigned spots...and away we go.

As you can see, the rug really looks good. The predominant color is dark blue, whereas our floor and walls are light blue. It looks as if it had been made for us.

One thing that I didn't expect - the area with the rug looks so homely, it has become the cool spot for the older readers to hang out when they come into the library in the mornings before school.

Thanks so much for your generosity. In a short time, you'll be hearing from the kids themselves.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Pearson

  • These Books Will Pull Teens Into Our Library Like A Magnet!

    Funded Mar 5, 2009

This is the easiest 'impact letter' I'll ever have to write! The difference that these books have made to the children's reading habits is extraordinary. Over half of the holds placed on the library computer are for the new books: either Naruto or Twilight. Take a look at the top 50 titles in the library for the past month. This page belongs to 850 students (in around 50 classes) at a K-8 Center in S. Florida. 88% of our kids come from households with below average income. Most of our parents are immigrants from Central / South America and the Caribbean. Typically, they have low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. They don't have the time, money, or command of English for our school to have a thriving PTA. 27% of our students are special needs children, bused to our campus from all over the city. (Profoundly Mentally Handicapped to Learning Disabled, including Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Intellectually Disabled, Autistic, Visually Impaired and Physically Impaired.) The kids love their school library, which serves as both a resource center and a social center – and the library runs on Donors Choose.
