In this day and age of technology, it has become increasingly obvious that students yearn to use their imagination in a way that watching a video, TV, or movie simply cannot do. We need to get back to our reading roots before there was the invention of a Kindle or a computer that could read books to you... a time when a student could curl up with an interesting, leveled reader and escape to an island with pirates afoot, a young boy who learns he has magical powers or stories that follow child characters who "find themselves in the middle of historical disasters"! As American author Anna Quindlen said, "Books are the plane, and the train, and the road, They are the destination, and the journey; They are home. With these series of books, my students will have the opportunity to activate their imaginations and ignite passions they might not realize they have. One's reading ability only increases when it is practiced time and again. I know these precious selections on our classroom bookshelves will heighten and nurture their potential. It has been said that, "A book is a dream you hold in your hands" (English author, Neil Gaiman 1960-) and "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body" (English essayist, Joseph Addison 1672-1719). Teachers, like myself, desire to afford this most important opportunity for each student to experience.
