As a school social worker, the challenges of 2020 have created a sense of responsibility and urgency in me to help provide our online an hybrid students with books at home. I believe these books should reflect the beauty that diversity brings into the world.
When the world went on lock-down this year, I was able to continue being present at lunch pick-up sites for our students. As they grabbed their lunch sacks and headed home, I began to ask them one question. “Do you have any books at home?” Usually the answer was no. In our Title I, K-6 school, we have students from a wide array of cultures and backgrounds. I want them each to have a book at home that they can see themselves in; a book that reflects the power of a story to reach deep places within each of us to connect us with those to others in our families, in our schools and in our communities. Books have the power to fill our minds and hearts.
Please help me to spread this gift to my students.
