Research shows that students learn best when they are able to relate to the material at hand. Including books with main characters that look like my students or showcase other minority groups, will assist my students in discovering an intrinsic motivation to read and will help them feel more welcome in society. Along with the books, having a cozy and comfortable area will encourage students to head to that area and get lost in a book. Many of my students fall below grade level reading standards, so it is beyond consequential that students begin to read more frequently and build their literacy level so that they do not continue to fall further behind.
