  • Engaged In Our Learning and Our Voices Heard!

    Funded Jul 14, 2021

I wanted to take a moment on behalf of myself, as well as my fourth grade students to thank you for your assistance in bringing this project to life.

We currently are all still masked up so it has been so helpful in projecting all of our voices in the classroom.

One area that this project has helped that I was not expecting was improving my students gross motor skills. With the pandemic, they have not been able to play a lot of group sports wether that be on a team or just the opportunity to play with others as they would in a normal school setting. When it came to introducing the throwable microphone, it took passing then rolling it. I'm happy to report that we are carefully tossing it now to some. :)

Again, thank you for your support, we are all so fortunate to have supporters like you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Phelan

  • Reading and Learning About Different Perspectives Through History

    Funded Sep 4, 2020

Thank you so much for your generosity in assisting my students. It is through your help that has allowed them to hear various perspectives throughout history.

Currently with distance learning, it has been a lot more challenging to build relationships and connections with students far apart. My initial thought of how I would use these books needed to be altered in a way to be utilized remotely. I believe that a blessing of distance learning while we are faced with COVID-19 has been the time spent with loved ones. Several of my students though have parents and guardians that are essential workers so they are either left on their own during the day or they are with an older relative. My hope with this portion of the project was to cultivate dialogue between generations about their heritage and culture and maximize this time that is spent together. We have been focusing on Native American myths and legends and how various cultures have different myths and legends for how things come to be. Students were asked to share a legend that either is from their culture or one that they enjoy”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Phelan

In a time where empathy is vital to learn about each other and our past I strive to cultivate a classroom that allows students to learn about the events and experiences that have shaped our history as a country and state. In my entire career of teaching, I have always been left wanting more from my students history textbooks. Too often are they extremely outdated and they often only tell one perspective and lack engagement. Through this project, I want to encourage my students to hear about all the perspectives that make up our history as Americans. The majority of my students come from a low socio-economic status and are English Language Learners. There is a huge struggle to identify with what is being taught in 4th/5th grade social studies curriculum. These books will continue to enhance a print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My goal is to blend History and Language Arts within my curriculum (for distance learning and in the classroom). Through these books and their various written perspectives it will increase cross cultural awareness and understanding. With the chapter books where the main character is a child or young person living through a specific historical event in US it will help my students identify, learn about, and engage with our past. I hope to not only promote a general knowledge of historical events, but a love of reading, and a validation of their perspective in life.
