H2O Quality in Great Lakes State - A Disney Planet Challenge
Funded Jan 13, 2012Words cannot express the gratitude I feel. My students had an AMAZING time working on this project! I think that collecting and testing water samples from their towns was their favorite activity of the year! They particularly enjoyed comparing their results to results they received from Norway. It was amazing to see the interest that the students took in imagining their planet this year. Having the opportunity to map their findings on the iPad was an experience that none of them will soon forget. I am so incredibly thankful for all that the Disney Planet Challenge project has taught my class.
Thank you so much for all you do. This project has not only helped my students' education, but also increased their self-concept. You have given them the power to see themselves as the change they want to happen in their world.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Biehls

Funded Jan 11, 2012For the second year in a row, you have been an amazing inspiration to my students.
Words cannot express the gratitude I feel. My students had an AMAZING time working on this project! They are still working on the play, and they get out the paint every day during recess. Although other parts of our DPC project are integrated into Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science, this portion of our Disney Planet Challenge only "officially" takes place once a week, during our drama hour. The students can never wait until Thursday afternoon to work on their set, which is why they choose to work on it during recess.
It was amazing to see the interest that the students took in imagining their planet this year. They are beyond excited to perform this play. I am so incredibly thankful for all that the Disney Planet Challenge project has taught my class.
This project has not only helped my students' education, but also increased their self-concept. You have given them the power to see themselves as the change they want to happen in their world.
On behalf of my students and our planet - THANK YOU (a million times over)!

Funded Jan 26, 2012I most certainly cannot express my full gratitude in words. The books "Bullying in Schools" was honestly a hit with many more students than I expected! It was very eye-opening to them. I think it was because it captured several stories that the students could relate to - whether they have been in similar situations, or could imagine that they might be one day. So many students loved those books, that there weren't enough to go around. I actually had to order more! This was very exciting to me.
The iPod was also a huge hit with the students! Many of them had never read on one before, and they loved that they had so many options available to them!
However, your donation to our classroom is much more than a monetary or material donation. Knowing that most of my students' parents will not be able to offer financial assistance to them for college, we have had several conversations about scholarships. We talk about work ethic and applying themselves in such a way that will encourage philanthropists to invest in their future. To prepare them for applying for college scholarships, (yes, I know that step is seven years away) I treat these Donors Choose projects as if they are scholarships for our class. We talk about donors believing in them enough to want to invest in their education. This is why your donation is not just an academic investment, but also an investment these children's self-esteem. It is proof to them that their hard work is recognized, and that I'm not the only one who is committed to fostering their love of books. I wish you could have seen the excitement on their faces when I told them that somebody else has invested in them and their futures.
I cannot thank you enough for your dedication to education and to helping my fabulous students become life-long learners! ”

Funded Oct 7, 2011Words cannot express how grateful we are that you chose to donate to our classroom. Each of the students in my class now have their own netbook for classroom use! They have gained so much knowledge and valuable experience with through the use of these netbooks. They submit work via email daily. They are more excited about reading because they can read books on the computer. They are more passionate about science because they can research any science concept they can imagine on the internet. They literally have the world at their fingertips!
Additionally, you have given my students their first "scholarship". We are constantly talking about their future and the importance of planning ahead. Very few of their parents will have the funds to pay for their college education when they graduate. They are aware of this, and we already have discussions about how they can have their education paid for. They know that if they work hard, they can convince total strangers to invest in their future in the form of a college scholarship. They know that the only reason they have these computers is because you believed in them and chose to invest in their futures.
Thank you so much, not only for the resources you have provided my students with, but also for the inspiration you have been!”

Who Can Save the Karner Blue? You
Funded Feb 19, 2011Thank you, again, for choosing to donate to our classroom. Words truly cannot express the gratitude I feel toward you for all that you have done for us. Thanks to you, the Karner Blue found some more fans. Equally important, my students became more confident in themselves as the blooming scientists that they are, as they spread their passion for nature. They had a fabulous time working on their presentations for the kindergarten classes. They were able to enhance their writing and presentation skills during this process as well, and they became more excited about learning! Every summer I spend a large amount of time reflecting on the previous year. One major difference that I observed this past year was my students' passion for science. It is true that elementary students are naturally interested in science. However, this year, the students were really able to foster their enthusiasm for science more than any class I have ever had.
I would like to express my sincerest thank to you for your amazing contribution to my students, their education, and their confidence. ”

Funded Mar 11, 2011My students loved reading on the Nook this year! I have to be honest - the Nook makes reading even more interesting than I expected it would! I knew that reading with technology would increase the students' interest in reading, but it seems to be more than that. The NookColor seems to make the words "pop". It has been getting students more excited about reading than I have ever seen before.
This NookColor will certainly have a huge impact on our class. However, your donation to our classroom is much more than a monetary or material donation.
