Students feel like they are in control when they get to choose where they want to work. This makes the students feel more comfortable and empowered! Flexible seating allows the students to choose where they want to work and with whom. A stand up desk will give my students the opportunity to choose to work standing up which will increase the oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. It will help my students stay alert and focused. An uncomfortable student is a distracted and unproductive student. The desks and chairs that we have now are uncomfortable. I often see many of my students standing up and bending over next to their desk. Some of my students choose to skip out on the desks and chairs altogether and sit on the floor with a clipboard. Having a stand up desk will give my students another option to choose when working. Traditional desks also do not teach students about how to work as a team. They have all of their materials and supplies in their desks which makes them territorial. Having flexible seating available to my students can encourage them to share and work together as a community which will prepare them for the real-world. Our classroom environments should promote open collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking. Unfortunately, this is difficult to achieve when students are sitting in individual desks all day.
